I keep hearing horror stories about the history job market but I also see people landing tenure track positions from good programs. I'm in a top 20 history PhD program (3rd year) focusing on modern European history. My advisor says the market has gotten slightly better post COVID but idk if that's just optimism. Looking at the AHA data, the number of TT positions has been declining for over a decade. For those on the market or recently through it how bad is it really? Would appreciate honest answers, not the "it'll be fine" stuff advisors say lol.
