Got admitted to two biology PhD programs. One uses a rotation system (3 rotations in year 1, then you pick an advisor), and the other has you matched with an advisor from day one. The rotation program is ranked slightly higher but I already have a pretty clear idea of what I want to work on (CRISPR based gene therapy). With direct match I could start doing real research immediately instead of spending a year rotating. For those who did rotations did you end up switching your research focus? Was the year of rotations worth it or did it feel like wasted time?
