I'm torn between applying for clinical psychology PhD programs vs research focused cognitive/developmental psychology programs. I enjoy both the applied and theoretical sides and plan to apply next cycle (Fall 2027 admission). My understanding is that clinical programs are way more competitive (2 3% acceptance rates at funded programs??) but give you more career flexibility since you can both practice and do research. Research PhDs are slightly less competitive but kind of lock you into academia or research positions... Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who made this choice.
