Is anyone here doing (or has done) an engineering PhD while also working on a startup? I have some research that I think has real commercial potential and I'm trying to figure out how to navigate this. Specific questions: How do you handle IP? If the university funded the research do they own everything? Was your advisor supportive or did they see it as a distraction? Did it delay your graduation significantly? I know the conventional wisdom is "just finish first" but I feel like the market timing matters and I dont want to wait 3 more years.
